Living a Champagne Life

This weeks blog is a little different in that we’ve drawn together three clips from You Tube which provide texture and colour to the theme of either having a long stay or retirement in Asia. The first clip is an interview with two journalists who have lived the dream and wrote a book about it. The second clip comes from a news story that was shown on the SBS TV Show ‘Dateline’, and the third clip is a radio interview hosted by Steve Price.

Celebrating old age on budget

So is it possible to have a Champagne lifestyle on a Lemonade budget?

Back in 2014 two journalists from the Australian Financial Review, Steve Wyatt and Coleen Ryan (who also happen to be husband and wife) wrote a fabulous book called “Sell Up, Pack Up and Take Off”. It really captures the essence of what retirement overseas is all about. This is an interview with the couple entitled “How to Retire in Paradise” which was shown on the TV show ‘Studio 10’

Australia has one of the highest poverty rates among over 65’s in the OECD, and according to a recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald, up to 35% of retirees in Australia are at risk of sliding into poverty. It’s therefore no surprise that more and more retirees are broadening their horizons and choosing to live overseas. The SBS TV show ‘Dateline’ highlighted this growing theme in its story “Paradise Pensioners”.

It’s important to note that this story concentrates purely on Thailand, and in particular Chiang Mai and Pattaya. It showcases the good, but also doesn’t hold back on some of the dangers (which in most cases are sadly self induced).

The third clip is a radio discussion on retiring overseas between Steve Price (from The Project and I’m a Celebrity) and Christopher Zinn (from the 50 Up Club). It once again provides a good overview on what is a fast growing segment of the retirement market.
As the Irish Policeman says in the Dateline story, you can indeed have a Champagne lifestyle on a Lemonade budget (and if you don’t like Champagne, the beer and spirits are also cheap!), but to vastly improve your chances of a successful and smooth transition, it takes careful planning and that’s where Retire to Asia can assist you.
