It’s always been a great stopover, and a pivotal location for travellers throughout the region, but with its superb transport links, world class healthcare and pristine city streets, it’s also an excellent ‘safety net’ for those planning a long stay or retirement in South East Asia.
World Class
The Lion city, the world’s only island city state, has a population of approximately 5.6 million driving an economic powerhouse upon a compact 719 square kms of land. Singapore ranks at the very top globally in terms of life expectancy, education, healthcare, personal safety and quality of life. It’s these key elements which provide retirees with piece of mind in the event they have a medical emergency, or perhaps the country in which they live goes through some sort of political disturbance. Singapore is a safe port in a storm, and its highly accessible from anywhere in Asia.
Transport
With Jetstar and Scoot providing direct links between Australia and Singapore, the full service airlines (Qantas, Singapore Airlines, British Airways and Emirates) continue to provide a regular stream of deals and special offers, thereby keeping the route highly competitive. Upon arrival in the city, Changi Airport (a regular winner of Skytrax “Best Airport in the World”) is truly a superb gateway to the whole region. Both low cost and full service airlines can take you literally anywhere at any time.
Attractions
The combination of its Colonial heritage, mixed in with Chinese, Malay and Indian influences make Singapore a diverse and exciting destination. Delicious cuisines abound, at all price points, whether its classy fine dining or hot and spicy street food. All your senses will be brought to life as you explore Chinatown, Little India, Bugis Street, Orchard Road, Sentosa, Clarke Quay or the fantastic Marina Bay district. The city is also host to magnificent museums, a vibrant arts scene, and the world’s only night time Grand Prix.
Sounds great, so what’s the downside?
The cost of living!
Singapore is on par with living in the major cities of Australia, and this of course makes it less attractive as a long stay or retirement destination. But for those who live in the region, the city is a short, convenient, and highly affordable flight away. It’s another great example of the fantastic locations that are literally on your doorstep when you live in this captivating region.
We look forward to seeing you soon in the Long Bar at Raffles for a Singapore Sling!
